New Zealand Game Animals

The high-country native land in New Zealand, where deer roam, is a rugged and untamed landscape, characterized by its dramatic mountainous terrain, steep valleys, and expansive plateaus. This region is covered in native tussock grasslands, which are interspersed with patches of beech forest and dense shrubland, offering a diverse habitat for deer.

Flax Hills is a remote and secluded property with elevations ranging from 300 to over 550 meters above sea level. The climate can be harsh, with cold winters, frequent frosts, and occasional snow, contrasting with warm, dry summers. This variability creates a unique environment where only the hardiest of plants and animals thrive. Deer in this habitat have access to a variety of natural food sources, including native grasses, shrubs, and the leaves of forest trees. The terrain provides natural cover and shelter, while the varied landscape ensures a range of altitudes and vegetation types that suit different deer species throughout the year. The high country is not only a vital ecosystem for wildlife but also a stunning representation of New Zealand's natural beauty, with panoramic views, clear alpine rivers, and a sense of untouched wilderness.

Red stag

Red stags were brought to New Zealand from British stock between 1851 and the early 1900s and have since become the most widely distributed deer species in the country.

Hunters can choose from a range of red stag packages, from our base-level options to premium packages featuring impressive stags. Select a package that fits your budget, and enjoy the flexibility to upgrade to a larger stag or add additional species while in the field if you wish!

THE FALLOW BUCK

Fallow deer were brought to New Zealand from England and Tasmania (Australia). They are distinguished by their unique, flat "paddled" antlers, which are more similar to those of a moose than a red stag. Additionally, fallow deer display the greatest range of colours among all deer species.

HIMALAYAN BULL TAHR

The formidable bull tahr, adorned in its full winter coat, is one of the most spectacular and coveted game animals in the South Pacific and ranks among the world's most impressive horned creatures. Tahr can be pursued on foot or via helicopter, offering a thrilling and flexible hunting experience.

AWAPARA RAM

New Zealand remains one of the few places where you can hunt the noble wild sheep. Introduced to Arapawa Island at the top of the South Island in 1867, this breed continues to thrive in its unique environment.

OTHER GAME

Beyond our primary species, we offer exciting opportunities to hunt a variety of other game. This includes chamois, feral goats and game birds.
